The Routes

Pretoria and Cape Town

The route between Pretoria and Cape Town is a 31-hour journey of 1 600 kilometres (994 miles), through some of the most diverse and spectacular scenery offered by the African sub-continent.

Pretoria and Kruger National Park

These one-way 19-hour journeys take place on selected months of the year, and offer guests an opportunity of some fantastic new “rail safari” combination packages with the many private safari lodges found in the Greater Kruger and Sabi Sands areas.

The Blue Train operates 2 train sets.

Train set 1 (Used mainly for charters)

17 coaches and can accommodate 70 guests.

Train set 2 (Regular basis)

Comprises 19 coaches and accommodates a maximum of 82 guests.

The Dining Car

The Dining Car seats 42 people and serves meals in two optional sittings.

The Blue Train prides itself on the fine cuisine it offers its guests with meals that are accompanied by a wide selection of South African wines sourced only from some of the finest boutique vineyards. The wine list has for a number of years secured the Annual Diner’s Club Award of Approval. There’s a menu for every taste. Whether you require Kosher or Halaal meals, or gluten-free vegan options, simply make your needs known at the time of reserving your passage.


Day 1

Register and check-in at The Blue Train Lounge, Pretoria Station.

Enjoy pre-departure snacks and drinks.

Butlers usher guests to their suites. Suite orientation done by butlers. Boarding concludes at 13:45.

High Tea is served in the Non-Smoking Lounge Car at 16:00.

First sitting for Dinner (18:30 – 20:00)
Second sitting for Dinner (20:15 – 22:00)

Day 2
Kimberley Station to Cape Town

Breakfast is served on a first-come-first-served basis.

OFF-THE-TRAIN EXCURSION (Weather & time permitting).

The Blue Train arrives at Kimberley Station.
Guests disembark and gather at the Railway Museum, from where they will be ushered to a bus, which transfers them to the Kimberley Open Mine Museum. Guests are first taken to view interesting and historical sites. Guests are also taken onto an enclosed ramp on the edge of the Big Hole. At Kimberly Station guests are greeted with a glass of sherry. The sherry glass engraved with The Blue Train logo as a memento for guests to keep. After this exciting tour, guests are welcome to refresh themselves and enjoy aperitifs served at any one of the lounges.

High Tea is served in the Non-Smoking Lounge Car at 16:30.

Day 3
Cape Town Station

Breakfast is served on a first-come-first- served basis.

The Blue Train arrives at Cape Town Station.

Butlers usher guests to the Arrival Lounge.

Dinner is an elegant affair. Gentlemen are requested to at least wear a jacket/waistcoat.
