Travel to Mountain Pine Ridge.

Travel to Mountain Pine Ridge visiting Xunantunich Maya Ruins along the way.

A short flight delivers you to Maya Flats airstrip. Visit the Maya Ruins of Xunantunich. Held within the Belizean rainforest, this site includes Maya plazas, palaces, and temples, as well as a modern museum. The hills were first occupied between 400 and 200 BC, though it was not until 600 AD that Xunantunich was used as a ceremonial site—making the entire settlement some 1,400 years old. Your expert guide will explain the culture and beliefs of the Maya, and you will see the ancient ball court where warriors often lost their heads whether they were victors or losers! From atop the ruins, you can take in a 360-degree panorama of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Continue to your lodge located in the Mountain Pine Ridge region.

Travel into the past.

Discover the extensive Maya site of Caracol, visit Rio Frio Cave and Rio On Pools.

Situated high on the Vaca Plateau deep in the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, Caracol is the most extensive Mayan site in Belize and was only re-discovered as recently as 1936. The site of Caracol covers over 80 square miles with 30,000 structures and at its peak supported a population more than 150,000. At the heart of the site lies the massive pyramid of Caana (Sky Palace) which is now almost fully restored and reaches a height of over 135 feet. From the top you can enjoy breath taking panoramic views over the forest clad mountains. The sprawling site contains huge ceiba, mahogany and sapodilla trees and is superb for birding (the rare Keel-billed Motmot is a resident of the site). Wildlife such as howler and spider monkeys, Oscillated Turkey, coatimundi, gibnut and grey fox are often sighted while quietly wandering along the site’s causeways or along trails connecting the plaza groups.

After lunch, drive back towards the Lodge, stopping at the Rio Frio Cave, and finishing our tour at the Rio On Pools, just as you are ready for a wonderful dip in the cooling pools of the Rio On.

Venture into Guatemala for a visit to the Maya site of Tikal.

Perhaps the most visually stunning of all Maya sites, Tikal’s five monolithic temples pierce the jungle canopy and ancient plazas, stelae and ball courts tell of a rich and powerful history when Tikal’s population reached almost 100,000. The site is justifiably recognized as one of the archeological wonders of the Americas. Its unspoiled jungle setting within the Tikal National Park makes it a paradise for birders, nature lovers and amateur archaeologists.

Travel to Punta Gorda.

Head to Punta Gorda with a stop at Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary & Jaguar Preserve along the way.

During the drive to Punta Gorda, located on the southern coast of Belize, stop for a walk through the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary & Jaguar Preserve. The world’s only jaguar preserve is a superb place for birding, hiking, and wildlife viewing. Hiking trails are well marked and range from easy to more challenging. It is possible to see howler monkeys, agouyi brocket deer, and peccary. The 128,000-acre wildlife sanctuary is a jaguar hotspot and provides a critical habitat for an estimated 80 jaguars.

After lunch, continue to your hotel in Punta Gorda.

Experience more of the Mayan culture.

Visit to Lubaantun and Blue Creek Village, enjoy a cave swim.

Today’s adventure is a must when visiting Southern Belize. Lubaantun dates back to the Maya Classic Era from AD 730 to AD 890 and features unusual rounded edge black slate rock architecture laid without mortar. Following the ruins tour, visit an authentic Maya village of Blue Creek where a traditional Maya family will host you for lunch and you can even try your hand at making corn tortillas. Continue with a challenging hike through the jungle, along the pristine river, until you reach Hokeb Ha Cave. These caves are mystical places and were known as Xibalba, or Underworld, passages, where the Maya believed the Rain God resided. Hokeb Ha would have been an especially revered ceremonial site as it features a waterfall within the cave. Enjoy a cave swim before heading back to your lodge.
